Basically, I’m a beginner. And I would like to know what size of stick thingy I should use(knitting and crochet), what kind of yarn is easier to use, what kind of patterns should i begin with. Im planning on making a hat using the knit and NO IDEA in crochet. Please I’m this hopeless! help!

Washable yarn for crochet/knitting other than acrylic?

I am just learning how to crochet and knit, and I know that wool has to be dry cleaned. Acrylic can be washed, but is a lot of times very rough. Is it that there are different types of acrylic yarn that are softer than others or is it actually different yarns? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
