This is our den. It’s become more of a dump room, as you can see. We lock the cat here at night, so there is cat food and litter in the closet. Plus I use it to store all of my knitting supplies. And our unused furniture is here. And we have the TV here.

Note: I chose this photo, among the five that I uploaded to Flickr on the morning of Mar 10, 2012, as my "photo of the day." I liked the "body language" and the look on the woman’s face, as well as the mix of light and shadow that I was lucky enough to catch here …

A Bunch of Knitting a Scarf Questions…?

April 23, 2012 - 6:58 am 4 Comments

Question by GrassyLemons: A Bunch of Knitting a Scarf Questions…?
I am knitting a cable scarf right now. It is 5 inches wide and going to be 65 inches or maybe longer. There are some questions I want to clear up before I finish it.

1. I am using Red Hearts yarn and it isn’t very soft. How do I wash it with to make it softer? I heard somewhere that you should add some hair conditioner to soften it. I am not sure that would work.
2. I might add tassels. Do I include the length of the tassels to the total 65 inches or finish knitting the 65 inches then add the tassels…
3. What type of affordable not cashmere (too expensive for my budget) yarn should I use in the future to avoid that roughness feeling that I have now…?

i’m confused with this pattern, i’ve knitted scarves and hats before but i have never used a pattern. this is the specific trouble i’m having:

Divide sts onto double pointed needles. Place marker for beg of rnd. Join by working the first st on left hand needle with the working yarn from the right hand needle and being careful not to twist sts.
Work in K1, p1 Rib worked in rnds until piece measures about (8) in. from beg.

Knitting question about gauge and needle size?

March 23, 2012 - 6:57 am 5 Comments

Question by sleepsheepnyc: Knitting question about gauge and needle size?
I have wool that’s listed at a gauge of 5.5 on #9 needles. The pattern that I want to use specified that I cast on 35 stitches with a #9 needle. However, I would like to use a #7 needle. Can you tell me how many stitches I would have to cast on to achieve the same width?
