Brisbane’s Kurilpa Bridge, the day before it opened.

Brisbane’s newest landmark, Kurilpa Bridge, cost .3 million and has been described as a cross between knitting needles, mobile magpie deflectors and a sailing ship.
The footbridge now spanning the Brisbane River paves the way for an estimated 50,000 people to walk and cycle between the CBD and the arts precinct at South Bank each week. Its unique "tensegrity" design combines tension and compression.
Kurilpa is the indigenous name for West End, the Brisbane suburb that is home to the arts hub.

People tend to either love or hate this new bridge – I love it!

The Kurilpa Bridge, designed by Cox Architecture, has won the World’s Best Transport Building award at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) Awards 2011.

Knitting needle case

I don’t know how to work my sewing machine (I guess skill with those bastards isn’t hereditary after all) so I sewed the whole thing by hand. I usually don’t have the attention span for that kind of thing; I have bins of cut-out fabric projects that have been cut, pinned together, basted, and then abandoned. This time I was gonna finish it, dammit. I doggedly sewed and sewed, hating every minute but determined to finish.

No other projects, just this. No photography, no knitting, no drawing, no cutting apart beer cartons and making a mess all over the floor. Just sewing.

It took me three days. But it’s awesome.

(I almost went with one of these two instead.)
