What wool can I use instead of Patons lush?
Question by jb5370: What wool can I use instead of Patons lush?
Calling all knitters – I have a pattern which says to use Patons Lush yarn. This has been discontinued so I am wondering what kind of wool I can use as an alternative. All suggestions welcome!
Definitely Patons Lush pattern – there are a few balls available on ebay. The pattern doesn’t look too ancient.Maybe one that was available in UK or USA or elsewhere only? (I’m in UK)

The Patons website was no help at all. Check the gauge given in the pattern. That’s what you’ll have to match. Find a yarn with the same gauge and approximate texture (if you know what that was) and it will work. If all you can find is the gauge, go with that.
I would suggest going to www.coatsandclark.com and checking their yarn summary chart.

This will help you match the gauge and get a yarn that is still in production. Coats & Clark has a fine selection of brands and yarns within each brand.

How old is that pattern? The only two yarns I can find named “Lush” are by Universal Yarn and Classic Elite, not Patons. Patons has discontinued a number of yarns in the past few years, including BeMine, Carmen, Cha Cha, Ci Ci, Evita, Glittalic, Katrina, Lacette, Mosaic, Nuance, Pebbles, Pooch, Rumor, Silverlash, Twister, and Voodoo. Are you sure it’s not one of those?
Added: It helped to know that it’s a yarn available in the UK–I’m in the US.
Turns out, Lush isn’t wool at all, it’s nylon. It’s 100% nylon and comes in 50gm skeins of 46 meters. The ballband gauge is 11sts x 15 rows to 10cm, which makes it a #6 or super-bulky yarn. (I think it may have been called ChaCha in the US–I have some of it and it’s a fuzzy, eyelash-type yarn.) Here’s a link to a shade card so you can see what it looks like: http://www.mcadirect.com/shadecards/lush.htm
Basically, any yarn that knits to that gauge on 8mm needles would work for the pattern. If you want the finished product to resemble the original, you’d need a fuzzy nylon yarn. The yarns seem to have different names in the UK; however, you can probably find one by using the fiber content and stitch gauge.
